What To Expect When You're Expecting

by Jason Fuller

A characteristic perspective between starting a family and building a fiber network.

While it may seem like they're polar opposites, starting a family and building a fiber network are not too far apart. They share fundamental principles of planning, investment, and long-term commitment. Let's take a look:

  • Planning and Investment: Both require extensive planning and significant financial investment. For both, you would need to consider the long-term needs and costs involved.

  • Continuous Development: Just like raising a child, a fiber network needs continuous nurturing to grow strong and thrive. You wouldn’t expect a child to flourish without proper care, education, and support—and the same applies to your network. Regular upgrades, maintenance, and enhancements are essential to ensure long-term success.

  • Resource Allocation: Both require careful allocation of resources, whether it's money, time, or personnel. You're not going to know everything on the first day, but resource planning should always be a key aspect.

  • Long-Term Commitment: In either situation, you will be faced with ongoing responsibilities and major challenges. You will never have all the answers all the time, but it's a commitment with enormous rewards.

  • Adaptability: Both require flexibility and adaptability to changing circumstances and needs. One day you could be dealing with broken arm or another day you're dealing with an outage due to weather. At any rate, unknown issues will arise. How well you can pivot and handle those needs, will carry you further in the future.

Both situations require some considerations: scale, complexity, regulation, and competition. In the end, we know life is significantly higher in ethical considerations, but building a fiber network can't be too far behind as a life changing choice. From expanding capacity to adapting to new technologies, a well-nurtured network, like a well-raised child, is set up for a bright and resilient future.
